Shocking, but true. Read on to learn more about what you can do about it.
See that photo up top? It's my favorite piece of art. It's also the smallest piece I own. I bought it traveling in Puerto Morelos (Quintana Roo, Mexico) from Francisco Sanchez Toledo. "Pancho" says its a portrait of his friends waiting for him to finish working. It hangs by my desk as a reminder....
Is your work never done? Are your friends and family withering away while you stay at the office, stay plugged in to your technology, and seek distraction from what's truly important?
News flash: There's no such thing as work-life balance. It doesn't exist. There's just life -- and how we choose to spend it. Ideally you're driven by something important to you, something that makes you feel alive, something that brings you to life more fully, something that fulfills your destiny and gives you purpose. More probably you're like most people merely going through the motions to get a paycheck because that's what's expected in our Western society.
In the old texts, Buddha says expectations lead to suffering. Are your 'shoulds' about life creating disappointment and frustration for you and those around you?
I say there's more to life than that. I say there's meaning and purpose for everyone, though many will fail to answer that calling. I say that even in a 9-5 you can find a bigger picture that better serves your vision of how you engage with the world. Don't get me wrong, paychecks are a good thing! And purpose is a really good thing.
My purpose is to unite people in ways that help them see that bigger picture, that elusive purpose, and that higher calling that keeps calling you to embrace your inner genius and pursue the things that matter. Below are four resources to help you discover, uncover, and recover that flame inside you. Two books, one video, and one workshop -- all highly recommended by Greg Whitt of Drum for Change.
